Sweetest Halloween Guide

BOO! It’s a cavity.

Tricked you! In the spirit of Halloween, we want to offer some tips to you and your family to prevent scares like that!

At Arbutus North Dental Centre, we know that Halloween is an exciting time for the kids. It can also be a nerve-wracking experience for parents. Halloween sets off the sweet tooth and the candy is a kid’s favourite part! Though candies and chocolates are yummy, it is important to teach your kids how to eat them responsibly; holding sugar in their mouths is one of the fastest ways to those pesky cavities. Say no to being a sugar shack!

Your Guide:

Brush, Floss, and Rinse. Then Do it Again.
Following their normal hygiene routine is extremely important. Brushing away bacteria will help get rid of that extra sugar that cakes on their teeth from the tasty treats. Kids ingest more of these sugary treats during festive events than normal. Flossing will help to loosen any extra food and undissolved sugar and a good rinse will wash it out. This will leave the mouth a little cleaner until the next brushing.

Wash it Out!
After having all that candy, give your kids some water. Water will help flush out some of that extra sugar and prevent bacteria from latching on.

Choose Wisely
Chocolates tend to melt faster and leave less sugar in the mouth than rock-hard candies. The more time sugar spends in the mouth, the more susceptible your mouth becomes to getting hurt by the cavity bug!

Get a Dentist’s Clean
Finally, regular visits to your Arbutus North Dental dentist are important to keep your teeth in the best condition and catch any small problems before they become bigger. A dentist’s clean after a Halloween sugar festival is a great proactive idea!
